What Galileo Is About

Prompted by a question from a new student, Galileo, teacher and theorist, takes up the newly emerging technology of the telescope and finds irrefutable proof that the earth is not the centre of the universe. But in a rigid society already shaken by plague and by the Reformation and ruled by an uneasy alliance of aristocracy and clergy, science is a threat and enlightenment a luxury. He is forced to choose between death at the hands of the Inquisition and recanting before an all powerful papacy. The film does not build that dilemma as a test of heroism. Chaim Topol and Edward Fox appear in Joseph Losey’s hundred and forty five minute British film, completed in 1975.
