Gardish

The story of a young man who wants to be a policeman. Shiva wants to join the police like his father. His father Sathe is an honest officer; for impounding the vehicle of a legislator's son he is punished by transfer to a difficult district. That district is controlled by a thug named Billa. Seeing what is done to his father, Shiva intervenes and beats Billa. Everything changes in that moment: the neighbourhood declares him a hero, a criminal record is opened against him, and his application to the force is closed. That is what the film describes: one right move turns a life irreversibly in another direction. Shiva becomes the neighbourhood's man without wanting to, fights follow one another, and his father cannot stop where his son is going. The bond between the two is at the centre: the father believes in the law, and the son sees that the law has no place for him. It is a remake of a film made earlier in Malayalam. Jackie Shroff plays Shiva and Amrish Puri his father. Dimple Kapadia is in the cast. Priyadarshan directed. The film won awards for art direction and action choreography. A hard example for anyone who likes Indian drama and father-and-son stories. For a viewer expecting a happy ending, the film grants its character no way out.
