Virasat

The story of a man who returns from the city to his village. Shakti studied in London and plans to set up a business in the city. His father is the head of the village: a landowner, the man who settles quarrels and whose word carries. Shakti wants to leave that arrangement behind and settle in the city with his fiancée. Then things go wrong in the village. The old feud between cousins grows, a blood feud opens, and his father is ageing. Shakti is caught between leaving and staying. The subject is inheritance: what comes down from a father is not land but responsibility. Shakti has to give up the life his education won him, and he does not do it willingly. The source was a film made earlier in Tamil, from a story by Kamal Haasan. Anil Kapoor plays Shakti, Tabu the village wife and Amrish Puri the father. Priyadarshan directed. It was a large commercial success and won awards in many categories at the national awards, including film, actor, actress and story.
