Chandralekha

Priyadarshan's 1997 Malayalam film follows an unemployed man looking for money to pay a debt. He gets a wealthy woman to hospital after an accident; her relatives take him for her husband and he does not correct the mistake. The humour comes from the lie growing. He answers every question with a new invention and moves into the mansion; the narrative advances the situation inside the template of the genre and a crowded supporting cast enlarges the confusion. Mohanlal leads. Priyadarshan made many films in this shape; the pace is fast, the scenes short and the songs break the narrative. The woman largely remains the object of the situation. Who it's for: those who like nineties Malayalam comedy. Who it's not for: viewers looking for an original plot; the film follows a familiar template with no surprises.
