Vellanakalude Naadu

One of Malayalam cinema's political satires. Pavithran is a young contractor. He wins a road contract and wants to do the job properly. But the system works otherwise: materials are stolen, payments are delayed, a share is demanded for permits, and local politicians are involved at every stage. That is where the satire is aimed: the web of interests around the council and who protects whom. The narrative shows it directly and clears nobody. The second line is a woman official posted to the district. She is someone Pavithran knew before and their history is behind it; she keeps strictly to the rules, which complicates things further. Sreenivasan wrote the screenplay and also appears in the film. Mohanlal plays Pavithran and received a special jury award for the role at the state awards. Shobana and M. G. Soman are in the cast. Priyadarshan directed. It was well received by critics and at the box office and reached a theatrical run of more than a hundred and fifty days. A strong example of its period for anyone who likes Indian cinema and political satire. For a viewer expecting light comedy, the film places a plain anger under its humour.
