Snegithiye

A Tamil mystery film. Vasu and Radhika are close friends at a women's college in Chennai. Both are jokers and inclined to bend the rules. Radhika's family wants to arrange a marriage for her and she does not want it. They find a solution: they invent a boyfriend named Ramesh. They write letters, produce photographs and convince the family. Then a problem arises. A real man of that name appears and is murdered. Because of the identity they invented, both become suspects and have to solve the case to clear themselves. What stands out is the cast: all the leading roles are women and the narrative is built on those relationships. A choice rarely seen in Indian cinema of the period. The source is a film made earlier in Marathi. Jyothika plays Vasu and Sharbani Mukherjee plays Radhika; Tabu is in the cast. Priyadarshan directed. An interesting example for anyone who likes Indian mystery and stories about friendship. For a viewer expecting a tight detective story, the first half is given to comedy and the mystery starts late.
