What Give Me a Complaints Book Is About
A group of young journalists wanders by accident into a restaurant called the Dandelion. The place is a disaster: rude waitresses, a thieving barmaid, a wretched interior, a ridiculous singer, and a deputy manager who is drunk all day and keeps the mess going. Tatiana, the young manager, is trying to fix it and cannot do it alone. Yuri, one of the journalists, writes a hard piece about the place and falls for her along the way. What follows is a fight against the bureaucracy. Eldar Ryazanov aims straight at the slackness of the service sector, and the film is one of the markers of how openly criticism could be made in Soviet cinema. Alexander Galich is among the writers.
