What Unbelievable Adventures of Italians in Russia Is About
A dying old Russian woman tells her grandson about treasure she buried under a lion in Leningrad, and everyone in the room hears it. What follows is a group of Italians descending on the Soviet Union and digging up every lion statue in the city. Eldar Ryazanov made it with Italian producers and put more crashes, explosions and vehicle stunts into a Soviet comedy than had been seen before. Most of the stunts are real: a car passes beneath a moving aircraft, a lion genuinely walks the streets of Moscow, and Andrei Mironov hangs off a building himself. The story is not subtle, but the pace never drops and the footage of Leningrad is among the best records of the period. Who it is for: viewers who like Soviet comedy and old-fashioned practical stunts. Who it is not for: anyone looking for delicate humour.
