What Office Romance Is About
A colourless clerk at a statistics bureau tries to make a good impression on his stern and disliked director in the hope of promotion, and the effort goes somewhere he did not plan. Eldar Ryazanov both criticises and loves Soviet office life: the bureaucracy is ridiculous and the people inside it are not. The transformation of the two leads comes not from a change of clothes but from each becoming slightly braver. Made in two parts and long, it is slow by current standards and its durability is easy to understand.
