What Forgotten Tune for the Flute Is About
Filimonov once played the flute. He now runs a section of a state directorate and is married to the daughter of an important man. A pain in his chest lands him in hospital, where he meets a nurse named Lida, and the affair that follows exposes how little he can stand his own life. In the end he returns to the routine and to a marriage he does not love. Eldar Ryazanov and Emil Braginsky reworked one of Ryazanov's own plays under perestroika, and the mockery of culture officials who ban anything original is unusually open for 1987. Comedy and grief share nearly every scene.
