Gone Running

Gabor Herendi's 2024 Hungarian film follows a mother who decides, after her husband's death, to fulfil his last wish. She and her daughters will run a marathon as a relay; the problem is that none of them is prepared for it physically or mentally. The film works in a comic mould but its real subject is grief. The training brings unspoken matters between mother and daughters to the surface; running is a pretext and spending time together becomes the actual purpose. Herendi makes commercial films that reach wide audiences in Hungary, and this is in the same line: accessible, emotional and brisk. The narrative proceeds predictably and no surprises should be expected. Who it's for: those who like family comedies and light sports drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting grief to be treated seriously; the film keeps the subject in a comic register.
