What Gozu Is About
Minami, a yakuza, is taking his brother figure Ozaki to Nagoya to kill him, because Ozaki's mind has gone and he has become a danger to the organisation. On the way the man dies in an accident, then the body disappears, and while searching for it Minami realises nothing in the town is normal: a woman who produces her own milk, a man with a cow's head, a hotel attendant who cannot speak. Takashi Miike opens in the yakuza mould and moves straight into dream logic, explaining nothing at any point. The birth scene at the end is among his most argued-over images. It screened in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes in 2003. Who it is for: viewers who like strange Japanese cinema and films that abandon logic. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot take repellent imagery, or who needs explanation.
