What Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song Is About
The 2022 documentary by Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller tells Leonard Cohen's life through the story of a single song. Hallelujah took years to write, was refused by his record company when first delivered and became known only through other people's versions; the film follows that journey. Its most interesting finding is that Cohen wrote around eighty verses for the song and sang different words in different periods. How the versions by John Cale and Jeff Buckley transformed the piece is set out in detail. Cohen's years in a Zen monastery and the financial collapse that put him back on stage are also part of the account. Because the structure stays tied to one song, some periods of the life are skipped. Who it's for: viewers interested in Leonard Cohen and the history of songwriting. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a full biography, or who will find the musical analysis excessive.
