Lindsey Graham What Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS Is About
To trace Syria’s collapse into war and the rise of the Islamic State inside that vacuum, Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested made thirty-nine trips to the region and shot close to a thousand hours of footage. The documentary sets the assessments of activists, journalists, diplomats and politicians alongside the accounts of families who got out, so that analysis and testimony sit in the same film. Its argument is stated plainly: the organisation did not appear from nowhere but followed particular political decisions and the disintegration of a state. National Geographic showed it in a hundred and seventy-one countries simultaneously in June 2017, after a premiere at Tribeca earlier that year.
