What How Poets Are Losing Their Illusions Is About
Dušan Klein’s 1985 Czechoslovak comedy is the second film in the Poets series. Štěpán Šafránek and his old schoolfriend Kendy leave their small town for Prague, one to study medicine at Charles University and the other to study directing at FAMU. The film covers Štěpán’s first year in medicine as the first serious collision between a young man who writes poems and the actual world, and it delivers the loss of illusions its title promises rather than dodging it. Klein wrote it with Ladislav Pecháček. Pavel Kříž plays Štěpán and David Matásek plays Kendy, and animated interludes drawn by Adolf Born run between the sections.
