Unable to continue studying because of his family’s finances, Domenico leaves his small town for Milan to find work. He is taken on as a messenger at a large company and hopes to be promoted eventually. Antonietta, whom he meets at the entrance exam, is in the same position, and something tentative starts between them before the company distributes them to different floors and different shifts. Ermanno Olmi shot it with non professional actors and showed how an entire life can begin and end quietly at a desk. One of the calmest and most painful films in Italian cinema.
