Omero Antonutti What The Secret of the Old Woods Is About
An old general inherits a wood from his uncle and his first thought is to cut it down and sell the timber. The wood turns out to be no ordinary one: it holds invisible spirits, winds that speak and animals living by rules of their own. The further the felling goes, the more the forest resists, and in time the general has to redo his arithmetic. Ermanno Olmi's 1993 film comes from Dino Buzzati's novel. It takes a story that looks like a children's tale and turns it into a serious argument about greed and about what is owed to the natural world. Paolo Villaggio plays the general, and Olmi's familiar gravity meets the register of a fable.
