Desislava Tenekedjieva What The Profession of Arms Is About
Autumn 1526. The Emperor Charles V sends German landsknechts under Georg von Frundsberg marching towards Rome. Facing them are the outnumbered papal forces of Giovanni de' Medici. Through a brutal winter the pursuit turns on rivers crossed and cannon hauled, and nobody does anything that looks like heroism. In a skirmish Giovanni takes a shot to the leg; the treatments fail and he dies. Ermanno Olmi shows war as cold, muddy technical work rather than glory, and what the film is really about is how gunpowder changed it. It competed at Cannes in 2001 and won nine David di Donatello awards in Italy, best film and best director among them.
