What Time Stood Still Is About
Two watchmen keep a dam construction site through the winter, high in the snowbound Italian Alps. When one of them goes down to the valley for Christmas, a young student replaces him, and the man left behind is irritated by everything about the boy: the loud music, the late mornings, the refusal to drink. For days they barely speak. Then an avalanche cuts the hut off from its power and the distance between them quietly begins to close. Ermanno Olmi started the project as a promotional documentary commissioned by an electricity company and came out of it with his first feature. None of the cast are professional actors.
