What Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo Is About
Danny Trejo grew up in Los Angeles and spent much of his youth in prison. After getting clean he gave his life to helping other people, and got into film entirely by accident: he had gone onto a set to support somebody who was struggling with addiction. The job that came out of that turned him into one of Hollywood's most recognisable faces. Brett Harvey's documentary does not hide Trejo's years inside or his boxing past; but what the film is really about is not crime, it is obligation. Trejo has worked for years with people fighting addiction and says he cares about that more than about his career. Robert Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez and Cheech Marin talk. What is left at the end of a life spread across seventy years is the idea that a second chance is genuinely possible.
