What Intervention Is About
Odessa, 1919, under foreign occupation. The authorities cannot find the wanted Bolshevik Yevgeny Brodsky because the same man is tutoring the nineteen year old son of a banker's widow under the name Michel Voronov, one of several disguises he moves through. Vladimir Vysotsky plays him and wrote and sang the songs. Gennadi Poloka staged Lev Slavin's play as something closer to a circus, with painted backdrops and heavy makeup, and it was exactly that clowning that put him at odds with the party leadership and with the playwright himself. The film was finished in 1968 and shelved. It did not reach cinemas until 1987, almost twenty years later.
