It Rains on Our Love

David and Maggi meet at a railway station. Both are running: David has just come out of prison, Maggi is pregnant and has nowhere to go. They decide to be together. Outside the city they break into an empty summer cottage. The owner, instead of throwing them out, offers to rent it to them, but his intentions are not clean. As the two try to build a life, neighbours, institutions and official procedures keep getting in the way. This is Ingmar Bergman's second film as director. The narrative sets two people against an order that works to keep them outside society; the interest in inner life of his later films is not here yet, and in its place are concrete poverty and bureaucracy. A figure enters the film as narrator and comments on events, giving it the frame of a fable. Who it's for: Anyone curious about early Bergman, Swedish cinema of the 1940s, and social drama. Who it's not for: The production is simple and the narrative slides into melodrama in places. A viewer looking for Bergman's familiar manner will not find it.
