What Jackie Is About
Two Dutch twin sisters are in their forties, with orderly lives that mirror each other. Then a call comes from America: the biological mother they have never met, Jackie, has had an accident and is asking for them. They fly to New Mexico. What they find is not a warm mother but a woman who smokes, says whatever comes into her head, and insists she needs nobody. The three of them set off in a camper van. Antoinette Beumer directs, with Carice and Jelka van Houten, sisters in real life, as the twins, and Holly Hunter as Jackie. A hundred minutes. It is a road film that starts in argument and softens by degrees.
