What Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child Is About
Bob Smeaton’s documentary tells Jimi Hendrix’s story in his own sentences rather than anyone else’s. Letters he wrote, postcards he sent home to his father, song drafts, drawings and lyric sheets were taken from the family archive, and Bootsy Collins reads them aloud. Concert footage and interviews from the period run between them, and Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding appear as well. The work the film sets itself is not to interpret a short life from the outside but to put that life’s own records in order and let them speak. The special was mounted by EMP in Seattle, and what comes out of it is less an outside biography than a journey the man narrates himself. It went out as a two hour special on 18 September 2010.
