What Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall Is About
Bob Smeaton's documentary contains the whole of the concert Creedence Clearwater Revival played at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 April 1970. The recording sat unreleased for years and could be seen complete for the first time in this film. Jeff Bridges narrates. The opening section summarises the band's formation and early years in California. It moves fast; the documentary is plainly built to make room for the concert. The tension between the brothers that led to the break-up is mentioned but not pursued. The value is in the performance. The band was releasing albums in quick succession at the time, and on stage they are tight, fast and unornamented. The picture has been restored; the audio keeps the live feel of the night. Who it's for: Creedence listeners and anyone interested in rock concert recordings from before the seventies. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a comprehensive documentary about the band's history; this is essentially a concert film.
