The Beatles: Get Back - The Rooftop Concert

In January 1969 the Beatles played an unannounced concert on the roof of the Apple building. It was their last live performance. This version assembles that concert for the cinema. It comes out of Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary series. The series runs three episodes and 468 minutes, covering the January 1969 sessions for Let It Be and ending on the rooftop. Jackson had access to 60 hours of footage and over 150 hours of audio left from the 1970 Let It Be documentary. Restoration used advanced techniques and a custom artificial intelligence they called MAL, which separated individual instruments and vocals from one another. Jackson described his own work as a documentary about a documentary; the aim was to supplement the 1970 film, not replace it. To avoid repeating the same material the series relies largely on alternative camera angles. The rooftop version opened in limited IMAX release in the United States on 30 January 2022, with international screenings between 11 and 13 February 2022. It was rated PG-13 for brief strong language and smoking. The series holds 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 85 on Metacritic, with critics naming its length as the one drawback. Who it is for: people who listen to the Beatles and want one performance on a big screen. Who it is not for: anyone who wants the context. This version concentrates on the concert, and the tension that led to it stays in the series.
