What Kendrick Lamar Live: The Big Steppers Tour Is About
Dave Free's 2022 concert film records Kendrick Lamar's show in Paris. The staging is unusual: an almost empty platform, a single piano and dancers arranged around Lamar; against the grain of elaborate stage design, attention here rests entirely on the body and the words. The therapy frame of the album is carried onto the stage, and the interludes voiced by Helen Mirren build the structure of the show. Its choices as a concert film are risky: little camera movement, few cuts and almost no shots of the audience. That takes the concert out of being a crowd experience and turns it into a record of a performance. For anyone who does not know the songs the context stays incomplete. Who it's for: listeners of Kendrick Lamar and those interested in stage design. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a documentary, or avoiding profanity and heavy thematic content.
