What Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work Is About
Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's 2010 documentary follows a year in the life of the comedian Joan Rivers at seventy-five. Rivers started out when there was no place for women comics on television; after she got her own show the relationships broke, and after her husband's suicide she fell into debt and had to begin again. While recounting this the film looks mainly at the present: her fear of the empty days in her calendar, her taking every offer, and how she counts herself as nothing when she is not on stage. Backstage she appears angry, brittle and extremely disciplined. The camera does not try to make her pleasant and she permits that. The archive of her joke files is the most striking detail. Who it's for: viewers curious about comedy documentary and the world of performance. Who it's not for: anyone who finds her humour uncomfortable; the film does not avoid quoting it.
