What The Devil Came on Horseback Is About
Brian Steidle, a former US Marine captain, goes to Darfur as a ceasefire observer for the African Union and spends eighteen months photographing what he sees. Then he refuses to let the pictures stay inside a report, and gets the evidence published through the New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg follow a witness arguing with his own helplessness as much as with governments. The title comes straight off the ground: Janjaweed, the name of the militias backed from Khartoum, is usually rendered as something close to devil on horseback.
