Kaka Boss

Arie Kriting's 2024 Indonesian film follows a hard-edged debt collector who wants to become a singer. He has to change trade and win the respect of his teenage daughter at the same time. The humour comes from the two wishes contradicting each other. The man collects money by frightening people and cannot carry the same persona on stage; the narrative keeps this as comedy while placing the father and daughter at the centre. The cast is drawn largely from eastern Indonesia, which is not a common choice in the country's cinema. The tone is light and the music is used inside the narrative. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian comedy and musical family films. Who it's not for: viewers expecting debt collection treated seriously; the film makes it ground for jokes.
