At its centre is Amet-Khan Sultan, a pilot and twice Hero of the Soviet Union, who goes home on leave to Alupka a year after the liberation of Sevastopol and witnesses the deportation beginning. Within three days roughly a hundred and ninety-five thousand people were moved to Siberia, the Urals and Central Asia, and more than a hundred thousand died of hunger, exposure and disease in the first year.
