Kino Eye

Dziga Vertov's 1924 film carries the name of his own theory and applies its claim directly, that cinema can see more than the human eye. It centres the activities of the Young Pioneers in a Soviet village: children pasting posters on walls, handing out flyers, urging people to buy from the cooperative. But the film's actual subject is not that propaganda content, it is how the content is shown. Vertov uses reverse motion, acceleration and montage cuts not as stylistic decoration but as a method for exposing connections in reality that are otherwise invisible. The best-known passage runs a piece of meat backwards from the butcher to the living animal, making the chain of production visible by reversing it. The film reads today both as a document of film theory and as a record of early Soviet propaganda practice; the two cannot be separated, and it is best watched knowing that. Who it's for: viewers interested in silent film history, montage theory and the roots of documentary form. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a narrative film, or who thinks the propaganda content can be watched free of its context.
