What The Eleventh Year Is About
Dziga Vertov's 1928 film is about the industrialisation of Soviet Ukraine in the eleventh year after the October Revolution: mines, factories, electricity and the building of the Dnieper dam. It was made at the VUFKU studio in Kyiv and shot by Vertov's brother Mikhail Kaufman. The film hides nothing about its propaganda purpose, and it is also among the first attempts at Vertov's programme of building a film language separate from theatre and literature. For fifty two minutes the editing, the rhythm and the machinery do the talking. What that picture of progress cost is not in the film.
