What Stride, Soviet! Is About
The Moscow Soviet commissioned a promotional and informational film to be shown to the city’s residents ahead of local elections. What came out of it was a wide tableau of Soviet life and of what had been built during the reconstruction that followed the civil war, with machines, engines and factory tools cut together almost as living beings. Dziga Vertov, however, did not do what those who commissioned it expected: there are no images in the film of Soviet officials at work and no direct evidence of their achievements. For that reason the production was denounced by the presidium committee of the Moscow Soviet and was largely kept off cinema screens. The sixty five minute film was shown on 23 July 1926.
