What Kuroko's Basketball - Movie: Winter Cup - Shadow and Light Is About
Shunsuke Tada's 2016 Japanese animation gathers the Winter Cup section of a long-running basketball series into a single film. Scenes taken from the television series are rearranged and some passages newly drawn. The film tells no new story. Its aim is to recall the early matches of the tournament and lay ground for the films that follow, so character introductions are passed over quickly and matches shortened. The familiar elements of the series are here: players with nearly supernatural abilities, long interior monologues and dramatic final seconds. The animation keeps the television standard with no upgrade for cinema. Who it's for: viewers following the series. Who it's not for: viewers new to it; the film is a recap and does not stand on its own.
