What Les Hautes solitudes Is About
Philippe Garrel talked Jean Seberg, in the middle of a long fight with mental illness, alcohol and drugs, into letting him film her days. What came out of it is entirely silent: no credits, no subtitles, no story being told. Grainy black and white close ups shot mostly in Seberg’s Paris apartment, with Nico, Tina Aumont and Laurent Terzieff drifting into the frame from time to time. Her inner life surfaces on her face and is wiped away again. Garrel later described it as a film made out of the outtakes of a film that never existed.
