What Letters from Baghdad Is About
The documentary is about Gertrude Bell, a woman unusually influential inside the British administration of her day. Bell travelled the Middle East, studied the region and its peoples, and was present at the tables where decisions were taken about the founding of Iraq after the First World War; the borders and arrangements still argued over today took shape in that period. The film rests on her letters and on archive footage of the time, with an actor reading the letters. The account neither declares Bell a hero nor treats her as merely an official; it shows the contradictions of someone working inside a colonial administration. The ninety five minute documentary by Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum was completed in 2017.
