What Liberation - Part 3 : Direction of the Main Blow Is About
The third part of an enormous series telling the Soviet Union's war against Nazi Germany across five films. This one covers the Belorussian offensive of summer 1944, the operation that destroyed the German army group in the centre. Yuri Ozerov worked with real tanks and thousands of soldiers, and the scale of the battle scenes is still startling. But this is a state production carrying the official account, and part of what the series did in the seventies was return Stalin to the screen as a competent commander. Not a film to watch alone; it sits in the middle of five.
