What Liberation - Part 5 : The Last Assault Is About
The fifth and last part takes place in Berlin: Yartsev's infantry and Tsvetaev's battery fight through the underground tunnels while Neustroev's company is picked to raise the victory banner over the Reichstag. Yuri Ozerov shot the five film series between 1967 and 1971 for the twenty fifth anniversary of Victory Day, covering five major campaigns from Kursk to Berlin. It was a co-production between the Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany, Italy and Yugoslavia, and the battle scenes used 150 tanks, two thousand artillery pieces and five thousand extras, most of them soldiers. It was shot in seventy millimetre wide format. How closely the account follows official Soviet history is something a viewer has to carry into it.
