What Little Annie Rooney Is About
Annie, the scrappy daughter of a beat policeman, fights her way through growing up in a poor New York neighbourhood, with her own gang of children on the street, her own fights, her own loyalties and her own idea of justice. Halfway through, the story turns sharply out of comedy and Annie’s world drops into something much heavier. Mary Pickford wrote and produced the film herself, going back to what audiences wanted from her after two pictures in adult roles had done only modest business. She was thirty-three and playing a twelve-year-old. The decision worked, because it became one of the highest-grossing films of 1925. William Beaudine directed.
