What The Old-Fashioned Way Is About
The Great McGonigle and his third rate vaudeville troupe move from town to town; they leave debts everywhere and keep a step ahead of the creditors and the sheriff’s men. McGonigle is both the head of the company and its least competent member; he performs tricks on stage, works tricks off it, and slips away at the last moment every time. Matters get more tangled when a relationship between the company’s young singer and the daughter of a wealthy family comes into it. In William Beaudine’s seventy one minute American comedy W.C. Fields plays McGonigle, and the film makes room for his stage routines and for his running battle with a small child. It was completed in 1934.
