What London: The Modern Babylon Is About
Julien Temple's hundred year archive journey through London. The film builds no narrative; it cuts a century of film, newsreel and music together and lets the city speak in its own images. Waves of migration, days of strikes, war, punk, riots and ordinary daily life all move through the same flow. Interviews shot in the present are cut between them. Temple argues no explicit thesis, but his choice is clear: at the centre are the people who live in the city rather than the people who run it. A hundred and twenty nine minutes of dense, tiring, very full montage.
