What Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan Is About
Julien Temple's 2020 documentary is about Shane MacGowan, songwriter and singer of The Pogues. It records him as he is now, his speech difficult and in a wheelchair; archive footage, family recordings and animated sections gather around that. What is interesting is MacGowan's resistance to being interviewed. He sometimes does not answer and sometimes changes the subject; Temple does not cut it, and the difficulty itself becomes the film's texture. Irish identity, emigration and drink are the three axes. Temple does not use the customary chronology of the music documentary; animated passages of childhood and live recordings run into each other. Who it's for: those who like music documentaries and The Pogues. Who it's not for: viewers who do not want to watch the effects of addiction; the film shows them without softening.
