Love Education

Huiying learns her mother's dying wish: to be buried beside her husband. But his grave is out in the countryside, and somebody has been tending it for decades, the man's first wife. Huiying wants the remains moved to the city and the old woman will not release them. In the middle of it, Huiying's daughter, a television reporter, starts making a story out of it. Three women from three generations argue over whom the same man belonged to. Sylvia Chang directs and acts in it. What the film is asking about is not ownership but proof: can there be documentation of love? Family law, household registers, old letters and a headstone all lead back to the same question. Tian Zhuangzhuang's husband says little and carries the film's balance. It has a maturity Chinese family films rarely reach.
