What Tempting Heart Is About
Sylvia Chang wrote and directed this 1999 film out of her own life. Cheryl, a director working in Hong Kong, decides to turn her first love into her next screenplay, and telling it to her screenwriter sends her back into it. The relationship between Hsiao-jou and Ho-jun, who met at school, therefore runs on two levels at once: as it happened, and as it changes in the telling. The gap between those two is what the film is actually about, since remembering turns out to be a form of editing. Takeshi Kaneshiro plays Ho-jun and Gigi Leung plays Hsiao-jou, and Chang appears in it herself.
