What Luck Is About
Sam, the unluckiest girl in the world, stumbles into a hidden realm where black cats and rabbits manufacture luck. It is Skydance Animation's first feature. The controversy around it has less to do with animation than with management. Skydance Media set up its animation arm in March 2017 in partnership with the Madrid studio Ilion. In January 2019 John Lasseter, formerly of Pixar and Disney, became head of animation there, and the hire drew serious backlash. Paramount Animation stopped consulting with Skydance around the same time. Emma Thompson had joined the cast in April 2019 and left the project after Lasseter's hiring. The director changed too. Alessandro Carloni was replaced by Peggy Holmes in January 2020. In December 2020 Apple TV+ took over distribution from Paramount, and the film went out on 5 August 2022. Rotten Tomatoes settled at 48 percent, with the repeated criticism being derivative storytelling and the repeated praise going to the design and the voice work. Who it is for: children who want a bright, fast family animation. Who it is not for: viewers looking for originality. The plot travels almost entirely through familiar territory.
