What Made in Italy Is About
Nanni Loy’s 1965 film is not one story but a panorama of Italy assembled out of episodes, written by Loy with Ruggero Maccari and Ettore Scola. One of them follows a flight to Sweden and divides the passengers into two groups, tourists and emigrants, which is to say two completely different journeys leaving the same country. Others take on bourgeois couples hunting for an authentically Italian restaurant, and short sections on family, work and morality. In keeping with the comedy of the period the film is needling rather than affectionate about all of it. Alberto Sordi, Anna Magnani, Nino Manfredi and Virna Lisi are among the many names passing through.
