What Why Is About

An Italian surveyor working in Sweden is arrested at the border while driving home with his family for a holiday. Nobody tells him what he is charged with. He is moved from prison to prison for months, asking each new official the same question and getting the same answer: you will find out when it is your turn. Nanni Loy's film went directly after detention without trial in Italy and forced the subject into public argument. Alberto Sordi, known for comedy, is not funny for a moment here, and won the best actor prize at Berlin for it.
