The Four Days of Naples

September 1943. When Italy signs an armistice with the Allies, the people of Naples think the war is over. But the Germans stay in the city and the pressure hardens: men are to be rounded up and sent to labour camps. For four days the population rises in its own streets. There are almost no weapons; the barricades are made of furniture, the petrol bombs are homemade, and many of the fighters are children. Nanni Loy's film reconstructs a real uprising and was largely shot in the streets where it happened. There is no single hero; the crowd is the hero. It was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film. Gian Maria Volonté and Lea Massari are in the cast.
