What Man in the Shadow Is About
In a modern cattle town everything runs through one man, Renchler, who owns the big ranch. A young Mexican hand working there is beaten to death and the whole thing is meant to be buried. When Sheriff Ben Sadler opens an investigation, half the town lines up against him, because half the town eats off that ranch. The one piece of support Sadler does not expect comes from Renchler's closely guarded daughter. Jack Arnold directs, with Jeff Chandler as the sheriff and Orson Welles as the rancher. It wears the clothes of a western but is set in the present day, and it is over in eighty minutes. What it is about is a town where the law works only with one man's permission.
